ABOUT THE FILM:
Tommy is a 1975 British satirical operetta fantasy drama film written and directed by Ken Russell and based upon The Who's 1969 rock opera album Tommy about a "psychosomatically deaf, mute, and blind" boy who becomes a pinball champion and religious leader.[5] The film featured a star-studded ensemble cast, including the band members themselves (most notably, lead singer Roger Daltrey, who plays the title role), Ann-Margret, Oliver Reed, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Elton John, and Jack Nicholson.
An independent production by Russell and Robert Stigwood, Tommy was released by Columbia Pictures in the US on 19 March 1975 while in the UK it was released on 26 March 1975. Ann-Margret received a Golden Globe Award for her performance and was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Pete Townshend was also nominated for an Oscar for his work in scoring and adapting the music for the film. The film was shown at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival, but was not entered into the main competition.[6] In 1975, the film won the award for Rock Movie of the Year in the First Annual Rock Music Awards.[7]
ABOUT THE VICTOR CO. PLAYERS:
It all started when…
Eldridge Reeves Johnson & Emile Berliner partnered in 1896 to launch what would become the modern music and home entertainment industries. Out of a small Camden, New Jersey garage, their invention and development of the disk record and turntable put quality music into the homes of millions for the very first time in human history…there was only one small problem.
After several years, The Victor Talking Machine Co. found it difficult to continue to create new music (and records) for their growing business and recording catalog. Like the modern day, they needed content for their hardware! So much so, that they decided the best course of action was to simply develop projects themselves by hiring prominent musical directors and creating an entire artist and music development part of the business; the birth of the fabled A&R (Artist and Repertoire) department, designed to create an ever steady development of music and music projects for the company’s record label(s)…and subsequently, the world’s very first ‘studio band’…a collective of musicians handpicked for Victor’s musical projects - dubbed ‘The Victor Co. Players’.
The forerunner for studio bands like The Wrecking Crew, and The Funk Brothers, The Victor Co. Players would become the world’s most recorded collective and their tradition spans 100s of musicians from their formation in 1900, to the modern day where the collective remain active in Victor Music Group projects year round.
